Texas Catholic Conference 22nd Annual Gathering
Poverty and Racism:  Through the Lens of Homelessness, Health, and Child Welfare
April 28-30, 2008 in San Antonio, Texas

The theme for this year’s annual gathering is based on the Catholic Charities USA policy paper, “Poverty and Racism: Overlapping Threats to the Common Good.”  It is a continuation of our focus from 2007, when as providers of social services in agencies and parishes across the state, we gathered as advocates to carry a strong anti-poverty message to Texas Legislators.

In the foreword to “Poverty and Racism,” the authors reminded readers that the Campaign to Reduce Poverty in America, launched in 2007, called for policy changes that would reduce poverty in half by 2020, and then reminded those committed to this effort that “we cannot responsibly address the issue of poverty without addressing the impact of race.”1 As Catholic Charities’ and Catholic social action staff and parish social ministers, we have seen first hand not only the impact of poverty on access to housing, health care, and child welfare, but also the realities of racial and ethnic disparities in these same arenas.  We invite you to join colleagues from across the State in this 22nd Annual Gathering of Catholic Charities, Catholic Social Action, Parish Social Ministry Staff and Volunteers of the (Arch)dioceses of Texas to listen, learn, and consider how we must respond to reduce poverty and disproportionality in homelessness, health care, and child welfare.
