Charity & Truth in Ministry: Our Call to Service

Keynote Speaker: Fr. Louis Brusatti, Dean of Humanities at St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas. Fr. Louis Brusatti will provide insight and reflection on Caritas in Veritate, Pope Benedict's third encyclical. The encyclical links charity and truth in the pursuit of justice, the common good, and authentic human development. In doing so, the pope calls all men and women to think and act anew. Raising Money for Ministry, presented by Scott Whitaker, Director of Stewardship, Diocese of Austin

Theology of Justice and Peace: Engaging the Hispanic Community, presented by Fr. Peter Ruggere, Diocese of El Paso TEPEYAC Pastoral Training Center

Models of Effective Engagement of Parishioners, presented by Rachel Lustig, Director, Parish Social Ministry, Catholic Charities USA


5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Panel Discussion/Networking Session - Representatives from Catholic Charities, Criminal Justice and Parish Social Ministry and Social Action ministries will briefly discuss their ministry areas. Participants will then answer discussion questions at their table and reflect on the common call to serve in their ministry areas. Table representatives will present their discussions at the end of the session.

Legislative Issues Panel - Texas Catholic Conference staff will discuss their work and specifically their advocacy on behalf of Charity and Justice Issues. State legislators will also present information on Health and Human Services and Criminal Justice concerns.

Wrap-up/Call to Action by Fr. Brusatti

Closing Prayer/Adjournment - Boxed lunches will be provided and participants are welcome to continue collaboration and discussion on working together in ministry and the common call to serve.


1:30 pm

Health Care Reform Report - Tentative Pending Congressional Action - Anne Dunkelberg, from the Center for Public Policy Priorities, will discuss the implementation opportunities and challenges we face in Texas regarding Health Care Reform.
