World's Largest Coffee Break
This year, on May 10 at 3 pm EST and noon PST, thousands of people across North America and Canada will join together to enjoy a Fair Trade Coffee Break at the same time. The Guinness Book of World Records reports that the current record for the World’s Largest Coffee Break consisted of 3,000 people enjoying the same break.

Participating in the World's Largest Coffee Break (Fair Trade of course) is a great way to communicate solidarity of the Fair Trade movement in the U.S.- across the country, and with Fair Trade farmers around the world. We are proposing you participate in the World’s Largest Coffee Break on World Fair Trade Day, May 10th 2008, at 3pm EST/ 12pm PST. The unified action is a means of celebrating those who produce the things that we buy. Consider the following facts and key talking points to support why this is so important:

  • Fair Trade coffee farmers are paid enough to cover their cost of production plus a living income.
  • The farmers are encouraged to adopt environmentally-friendly practices. Over 85% of Fair Trade coffee is also certified organic.
  • Fair Trade offers the farmers the opportunity to participate actively in the business - they export their own product and negotiate on more equitable terms.
  • Fair Trade encourages farmers to create cooperatives which frequently do what governments do not - build schools, roads, wells and other community infrastructure.
