Como líderes religiosos de Texas, unimos nuestras voces para pedir a nuestra Asamblea Legislativa un tono nuevo y amable en el debate de inmigración de nuestro estado. Alentamos a los legisladores a enfocarse en el alivio de las comunidades de Texas y en la afirmación de los derechos y el valor inherente de cada persona. (Read this statement in English here)
Nuestro sistema de inmigración nacional es deficiente y resulta en sufrimiento, no sólo dentro de nuestras fronteras, sino también en el resto del mundo. Nuestras tradiciones religiosas han pedido enérgicamente y sin descanso al Congreso que reforme nuestro sistema federal de inmigración, y vamos a seguir haciéndolo.
Reconocemos y apoyamos el derecho de los Estados Unidos de proteger y asegurar nuestra frontera y hacer cumplir nuestras leyes de inmigración. Apoyamos el trabajo de los legisladores y funcionarios del orden público en la protección de todas las personas en Texas. Sin embargo, cuando se trabaja para mantener y mejorar la seguridad pública, nuestros Legisladores de Texas deben tener cuidado al considerar políticas que pudieran disminuir la seguridad y arriesgar la privación involuntaria de los derechos civiles y constitucionales de los ciudadanos y residentes permanentes legales.
Instamos a los Legisladores de Texas para proporcionar orientación y liderazgo a nuestro estado rechazando políticas que puedan fomentar la discriminación, cooptar a las autoridades locales o hacer de inmigrantes chivos expiatorios.
Como los políticos y dirigentes, los Legisladores de Texas tienen la oportunidad y la responsabilidad de guiar a toda nuestra comunidad hacia un futuro de compasión, gratitud y respeto mutuo. Al afirmar la dignidad de cada persona, incluyendo a los que emigran, los legisladores pueden ayudar al pueblo de Texas a trasladarse del miedo al respeto. Y sólo con respeto podemos trabajar con todos los estadounidenses para construir un sistema nacional de inmigración verdaderamente justo.
