April 20, 2011

Texas Catholic Conference

Weekly Update

Holy WeekWe wish you a Blessed Holy Week!

Jesus' death and resurrection is an ever present victory for all of us - the battle over sin and death is won! All of us at the Texas Catholic Conference wish you a blessed Holy Week and pray that the joy of the resurrection will be with you always! We are including several resources on Holy Week in our News section

Choose Life License PlateThis week we also published aresource article on advance directives that provides more information on the position of the Texas Bishops on this issue (click here to view). We also released a position statement on the payday lending bills that are moving forward (click here to view). We also congratulate Father José Arturo Cepeda, rector of Assumption Seminary in San Antonio, whom Pope Benedict XVI has named as an auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Detroit.

Several bills that we are tracking have passed from committee this week. Significantly, the Choose Life License Plate bill (SB 257) was passed from the House Transportation committee and will be going to the House floor for a vote. Please see our action alert below on how to contact your Representative and ask for his/her support.

Contact Representative <<State Representative>> by calling <<State Rep's Phone>> (preferred) or email him/her here <<TX Rep Email>>.

Sample Message: "Hello, my name is <<First Name>> and I am a Catholic in  CITY,  Texas and as a constituent I ask that you support SB 257. This bill allows for the issuance of "Choose Life" license plates. A portion of the purchase price of every plate would be collected into an account from which grants would be distributed to charitable organizations that help pregnant women place their children for adoption. I support this bill because it  promotes a Culture of Life in our state and supports pregnancy centers that advocate for adoption. Thank you for your time. For more information you can contact the Texas Catholic Conference at 512-339-9882."

Please act by April 27, 2011. If you contact the office and this alert has already expired, you may ask for your legislator's position and thank him or her or express your disappointment accordingly. Please feel free to write to us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to let us know about your advocacy experience and about any responses you receive.

During the last few days we also provided testimony on on several issues including on Advance Directives, Immigration Law Enforcement, Access to Quality, Affordable Child Care, and Education Tax Credits. Thank you to everyone who supported these bills by acting using our action alert from last week's newsletter as well as the alerts on our web site. We have updated several testimonies to our Video testimony page, click here to watch the videos that we have available. We welcome you to share these videos with others.
