Ask SB 1811 Conference Committee to Support Amendments on Judicial Bypass Study, Homeless Housing and Services Program Funding, and Smoking Ban
May 25, 2011

Take Action Now!

There are 3 amendments to SB 1811, a fiscal matters bill, that we support. These amendments would authorize a study on judicial bypass for abortion for minors, allow for the use of additional funds for the Texas Homeless Housing and Services Program (HHSP), and ban smoking in public places. The bill is currently being considered by a conference committee of house and senate members, who are tasked with reconciling differences between the versions of the bill passed by each chamber. This fiscal matters bills must be passed in order to balance the state budget anda balanced state budget is a constitutional requirement. Please contact the conference committee members today and ask for their support of these amendments. See below for a sample message and contact information.

Sample Message: "Hello, my name is Name and I am a Catholic in City, Texas. I am calling to ask that you accept the following amendments to SB 1811, which has the support of the Texas Bishops. First, Representative Jim Landtroop's amendment, #90, which authorizes a study by the Supreme Court on funding used to pay for attorneys who represent minors seeking judicial bypass from parental consent for abortion. It is important that we know the frequency and costs of judicial bypass so that we can craft strategies to continue to support teenage moms and help them choose life for their unborn children. Second, please accept Representative John Otto's amendment, #9, which allows Texas Enterprise Funds to be used for the Texas Homeless Housing and Services Program. It is vital that this program is funded so that we can protect the most vulnerable in our state. Finally, please accept Representative Crownover's amendment, #53, which bans smoking in public places, in its original form without any of the additional amendments that would allow for exemptions. Thank you for your time and hard work for the people of Texas. For more information you can contact the Texas Catholic Conference at 512-339-9882."
