Action Alert: Ask HB 1286 Conference Committee to Support Amendment to Allow Access to UIL for Private and Parochial Schools
May 26, 2011

Take Action Now!

During this legislative session, we have advocated for legislation that would allow private and parochial school students to children who would like to compete in a fair and equitable manner in academics, athletics and music. While the bills on these issues are no long moving, the language from the bills has been added as an amendment to HB 1286. The bill is currently in conference committee ,where the members will determine which amendments to keep or remove.  Please contact the conference committee members today and ask for their support of the amendment to allow for access to UIL for private and parochial school students. See below for a sample message and contact information.

Sample Message: "Hello, my name is *|IF:FNAME|* *|TITLE:FNAME|* *|ELSE:|* Name *|END:IF|* and I am a Catholic in *|IF:CITY|* *|CITY|*,*|ELSE:|*City ,*|END:IF|*  Texas. I am calling to ask that you accept floor amendment 3 to HB 1286, which allows private and parochial school students to participate in University Interscholastic League activities (UIL). My support for this amendment is because of a matter of justice as well as public safety. Regardless of whether our students are in public, private or parochial schools we need to recognize that they are all Texas children who would like to compete in a fair and equitable manner regarding academics, athletics and music. In addition, private and parochial school students often travel very far away to participate in activities with other schools and have to return to their schools at dark, which increases their chances of an accident. This amendment excludes football and basketball, which were the main points of opposition from opponents to bills dealing with this issue. Thank you for your time and hard work for the people of Texas. For more information you can contact the Texas Catholic Conference at 512-339-9882."

Testimony from TCC Education Director on Access to UIL for Private and Parochial Schools
Regardless of whether our students are in public, private or parochial schools we need to recognize that they are all Texas children who would like to compete in a fair and equitable manner regarding academics, athletics and music. The Scripps National Spelling Bee is a wonderful example of how students can fully participate in a competition regardless of their mode of education be it public, private or homeschool.
