Labor Day provides us with the opportunity to thank God for the blessings he gives us through the gift of work. "This Labor Day we need to look beyond the economic indicators, stock market gyrations, and political conflicts and focus on the often invisible burdens of ordinary workers and their families, many of whom are hurting, discouraged, and left behind by this economy," said Bishop Blaire, Bishop of the Diocese of Stockton, in this year's U.S. Bishops' Labor Day Statement.You can read the statement online in English here and in Spanish here. Especially as the recession continues, we pray for those who are struggling to obtain work and provide for themselves and their families. Approximately two million Catholic young adults from around the world participated in World Youth Day last week.You can learn more about the Texas Bishops who participated here. "I thank God for this precious gift, which gives hope for the future of the Church: young people with the unwavering and sincere desire to root their lives in Christ, to remain firm in the faith, and to walk together with the Church," said Pope Benedict XVI after the event. He has announced that the next World Youth Day will be held in Rio de Janeiro in 2013. Texas Bishops A Shepherd's Message By Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston Last month I celebrated a Mass for the Movimiento Familiar Cristiano Católico, a national group of Latino Catholic Family ministers. It was a wonderful and lively assembly of married couples and their children. The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston has been proud to be a center and enthusiastic supporter of this ministry. Working Together for Good in His Name By Bishop Curtis J. Guillory, SVD, Diocese of Beaumont On July 25, 2011, the Houston Chronicle featured an article about talented young musicians who died a tragic death at the age of 27. The death of Amy Wine-house prompted the article. Some of those talented musicians were, of course, Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain, Jim Hendrix, Robert Johnson, Brian Jones, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison. Besides having great musical talent in common, these musicians also had drug addictions, alcohol and sex addictions. They were also disconnected from healthy relationships, going from one relationship to another.
