As we prepare for the Advent season and recall the birth of the Prince of Peace in humble surroundings, millions of our fellow Americans have seen their economic security disappear.  Millions more yearn for peace and a world free of the threat of nuclear war.
 
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has produced three action alerts aimed at promoting children, families, and peace in our world. Click the links below to read more about each of these action alerts, and see below for how to contact to contact your Congressional Delegation.

Senators

Sample Message: "Hi my name is  Name  and I am calling from City, Texas. As a Catholic, I ask you to protect families and help provide them with dignified wages by:

  • Extending Unemployment Insurance through 2011;
  • Extending the TANF Emergency Contingency Fund (ECF), which has allowed states to create over 200,000 jobs for low-income families
  • Extending the Child Tax Credit (CTC) and the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), and ensure that they remain refundable; and
  • Providing $1 billion for low-income housing through the National Housing Trust Fund (NHTF)
I also urge you to publicly support the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty Treaty because it makes our nation and world safer by reducing nuclear weapons in a verifiable way, and I ask you to ensure that the the Senate leadership brings it to a vote. Thank you for your time."

  • Passing the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act (S.3307); which will improve nutrition for all children; increase access to healthy meals; and takes an important step forward in addressing both child hunger and obesity
  • Ensuring that SNAP (Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program formerly known as the Food Stamp Program) be safeguarded from further cuts; and
  • Ensuring that current proposed cuts to the SNAP program be restored or funded through other means as soon as possible
