TCC Welcomes Archbishop Gustavo
Written by Andrew Rivas
November 22, 2010

Bishop-Gustavo-Garcia-Siller-smThe Texas Catholic Conference is excited to welcome the Most Reverend Gustavo Garcia-Siller as the new archbishop for the Archdiocese of San Antonio.  His Excellency, who prefers to be called "Archbishop Gustavo," was installed on Tuesday, November 23, 2010, and is the sixth archbishop of the San Antonio archdiocese.

Our newest Episcopal leader in San Antonio comes to Texas most recently as an auxiliary Bishop in Chicago. Originally born in the central Mexican city of San Luis Potosí and the oldest of 15 children Archbishop Gustavo entered the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit in Mexico City in 1973. In 1980, his Order sent him to California to minister to migrant farm workers along the western seaboard from Southern California all the way to Alaska. He was ordained into a priest on June 22, 1984.

As a priest, Archbishop Gustavo was promoted to lead his order's U.S. province before His Holiness, the late John Paul II, called him to be a bishop on January 24, 2003, and appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago.  As an auxiliary, he served as Episcopal Vicar for Vicariate V and was the Cardinal's liaison to the Hispanic community. His pastoral and leadership skills have been an important part of his ministry as he has continually spoken out to protect the unborn, worked to combat poverty, violence, and racial discrimination. The TCC welcomes Archbishop Gustavo to Texas.
