News Release: Catholic Southwest Earns Two Catholic Press Association Awards

AUSTIN—The Texas Catholic Historical Society’s journal, Catholic Southwest: A Journal of History and Culture, earned two Catholic Press Association awards this year in the Scholarly Magazines category.

 

The 2010 issue of Catholic Southwest won second place for the Cardinal John P. Foley Award for General Excellence and second place for Best Feature Article for an article entitled: “Courage Under Fire: St. Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament Confront the Ku Klux Klan.”

 

Published annually by the Texas Catholic Historical Society, Catholic Southwest features essays on aspects of the Roman Catholic heritage in Texas and the Southwest as expressed through history, art, architecture, literature, music, and other related subjects. The journal is a core component of the Texas Catholic Historical Society’s endeavors to discover, collect, preserve, and publish historical material relating to the Catholic community in Texas and the Southwest. The 2011 edition of Catholic Southwest has just been released and features several articles including:

  • From Hispanic Gateway to Border Byway: The Catholic Church in the Middle Rio Grande District of Coahuila/Texas up to 1884
  • The Missionary Explorer-Scientist, Father Eusebio Kino, S.J.: Faith, Maps, Sea Shells and the Mission San Xavier del Bac; and,
  • One Bread, One Body: The Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament in Southeast Texas

Our Mission The primary purpose of the Conference is to encourage and foster cooperation and communication among the dioceses and the ministries of the Catholic Church of Texas.
